Walk Week

Walk Week is a free annual event that encourages West Australians of all ages to become more physically active by walking for health, transport, recreation and the environment.

This year we are pleased to announce the 10th anniversary of Walk Week and would like to invite your organisation to participate. Workplaces, local governments and the community are invited to host a walking event by holding a lunchtime walk, trying a local trail or even starting a walking group.

Register to hold a community or workplace walking event between 1 – 7 November 2010 online at www.transport.wa.gov.au/walking by 17 September 2010 to receive free merchandise and an event kit.

Sunday Acting Workshops for Youth

Adult and Teen Get Into Small Boat Sailing

Learn to sail at Nedlands Yacht Club (NYC). NYC provides sailboat (Pacer dinghy), life jackets, shower facilities and Yachting Australia logbooks. Logbooks are nationally recognized and can be used at any facility or club teaching Yachting Austalia sailing classes.

Juniors Learn To Sail at Nedlands Yacht Club

The youth class is called “Junior Learn to Sail” and has 2 coaches who teach sailing skills slowly with plenty of repetition. Kids work at their own pace in a class of 8 to 12 students. Instructors customise the exercises based on skill levels and frequently break the class into separate skill groups. Most junior classes have a mix of sailors ranging in age from 8 to 12 years old. Kids typically need 2 to 4 classes then may choose to move to the next level, “Transition to Racing”.

The course runs for 5 days - 4 hours per day starting Monday 4 October to Friday 8 October 2010 from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM

YOH Fest Mandurah Heats

Heats will be held over a week long period for this annual theatre event. Youth On Health festival requires high school students to get together to construct and perform their own dance sequence, drama play, art piece, media production or song performance on a relevant youth health theme.

Thousands of young people participate in YOH Fest events held across the State each year, performing their productions in some of WA's best regional venues with hundreds of audience members. YOH Fest patrons Ernie Dingo and Professor Fiona Wood are two of YOH Fest's biggest fans, and both take an active involvement in the festival each year.

10. How can I become more mentally healthy?

Keeping mentally healthy is just as important as staying physically healthy and it's as easy as A-B-C: Act-Belong-Commit.

Take a walk, read a book, do a crossword puzzle, dance, say g'day. Being active physically, socially and mentally helps us cope with stresses, builds friendships and lifts our spirits. Make a list of things you enjoy and spend more time doing them!

Join a book club, a sporting team, a walking group or start a cooking class. Be more involved in community organisations and attend community events. Hang out with people who share your values and interests. Belonging helps build friendships, creates opportunities for meaningful participation, strengthens communities and it simply feels good!

Make that extra 'commitment' to a hobby or a good cause. Help out a neighbour, or volunteer for a good cause. Be a coach or a mentor. Support your community clubs and groups. Try something challenging; learn a new skill. These activities give meaning to life. Being active, having a sense of belonging and having a purpose in life all contribute to happiness and good mental health. Act-Belong-Commit.

Shinju Matsuri Festival

The beautiful northwest town of Broome will come alive with 10 days of festivities that showcases talents of Broome including traditional and contemporary arts, and industry, community and tourism events which celebrate and acknowledge the town's unique culture, history and diversity.

Shinju Matsuri encourages all cultural groups from the Broome community to participate in the celebrations to develop constructive and harmonious Broome community relationships.

You are invited to design and drive a float, perform on stage, submit a work for the art prize, carry a flag, steer a boat, participate in a workshop, taste pearl meat and honor our patrons
