Have your say! Mental health neglected in WA’s Public Health Plan

Created Wednesday, 02 August 2017 in News
If you, like us, are baffled as to how the State Public Health Plan http://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/~/media/Files/Corporate/general%20documents/Public%20Health%20Act/First%20Interim%20State%20Public%20Health%20Plan.ashx can completely neglect mental health, have your say! Consultation on the draft Interim State Public Health Plan is now open to Local Governments.

So many LG’s have told us that mental health is one of the biggest issues facing their community. It appears the Dept. of Health has neglected to include mental health as they see it as the Mental Health Commission’s business. We argue that government departments should not work in silos. To completely abandon mental health in such an important government policy document has the potential to reduce investment in this important public health issue. To echo the words of the World Health Organisation ‘There is no health without mental health’.

To make it easy for you to participate in the consultation, we have drafted a one-page info sheet with some stats and statements around the importance of mental health as a public health issue. Campaign Manager Amberlee Nicholas is available to chat should you need further support in making a submission to the DoH (a.nicholas@curtin.edu.au or 9266 1709).
