About this activity...

About: Rowan's Walk commenced initiated 5 years ago by young Indigenous leader Mr Rowan Dann. Rowan found solace walking from Port Hedland to South Hedland after his Aunty took her own life. In her memory, and in memory of others that had taken their own lives, Rowan wanted to raise awareness of the mental health challenges in his community and to honour and remember those who had lost their life to suicide.

Where & When: Rowan’s walk will be held in Newman at 6am on Saturday October 8th 2022 to coincide with multiple other towns across WA. The walk will begin at 6am on Radio Hill, with buses leaving from Town Square from 5:30am to transport people to Radio Hill for the 6am start.

Route: Commencing at the top of Radio Hill, walkers then travel down the hill, turning left and around the hill to Forrest Avenue, along Forrest Avenue to the end, right onto Fortescue Avenue, left onto Mackay Street, across Newman Drive to Town Square.

More information: The walk ends at Town Square where there will be a commemoration event with speeches, performances, the butterfly release and breakfast.
The Town Square will also host stalls from local service providers and supports that Newman have who work in the mental health & social, emotional wellbeing space.
Please come along to support this event, to remember those we have lost to suicide, but to also de-stigmatise conversations about suicide and mental health challenges.

If you are interested in supporting this event, working behind the scenes, having a stall or providing donations, please feel free to be in contact with Beck Johnson (Rebecca.johnson@puntukurnu.com).
