Midwest NAIDOC Week Celebration Event

Posted 23 Sep 2019

On the 23 July 2019, Janine and Amara from the Act-Belong-Commit team, set off on a road trip to Morawa for the Midwest NAIDOC Week celebration event.

Morawa is a small town of approximately 750 people, and is a 4-hour drive almost directly north of Perth. Once Janine and Amara arrived, they were welcomed by Renee King from the Shire of Morawa. Renee is their Community Development Officer and a devoted promoter of the Act-Belong-Commit message within the Morawa community. Renee and her team had put together a wonderful event for the following day, involving not only the local community, but neighbouring communities and schools.

The day began with a march.

The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as over 800 people gathered behind one another to commence the march into town.

The theme “Voice, Treaty, Truth was meaningfully visible not only on banners but with the presence of the community coming together. There was singing, dancing, drawing and lots of other wonderful activities that anyone could participate in. Janine and Amara ran an Act-Belong-Commit stall throughout the day, engaging with children, adults, school teachers and other members of the community. The Act-Belong-Commit pledge wall was in full swing with an overwhelming amount of pledges made by individuals for their mental health.

Act-Belong-Commit is grateful to have had the opportunity to attend such a wonderful event, and we thank Renee for her hospitality during our stay. We are already looking forward to next year’s celebrations!
