Mental Health Week 2019 Recap

31/10/2019

Wellness days, hikes, expos, photo competitions, yoga and drumming circles - just a few of the Mental Health Week events that were run by Act-Belong-Commit partners across WA in 2019!

We’ve loved hearing stories about what our partners got up to, we thought we’d share a few of our favourites from the City of Mandurah, City of Subiaco, Pilbara Population Health, South West Women's Health and Information Centre and Centacare Geraldton.

City of Subiaco Lunchtime Yoga Session

City of Subiaco - Wind Down Wednesday

The City of Subiaco hosted ‘Wind Down Wednesday’, which included a free lunchtime yoga session, mindful colouring and a puzzle station.

An Act-Belong-Commit information station with merchandise and resources, and an Act-Belong-Commit prize pack was displayed at the Library and Lords Recreation Centre all week, encouraging people to sign up to the City’s newsletter to stay connected.

The Wind Down Wednesday event was a great day and the free lunchtime yoga was a big hit!

WACHS Pilbara Sam Act-Belong-Commit pledge

WACHS Pilbara – Pledge Competition

Pilbara Population Health (PPH) ran a competition inviting people to submit a pledge on how they keep mentally healthy. At the end of the week, PPH put all of the pledges in a hat, and awarded Act Belong Commit prize packs to winners drawn at random.

Here’s a couple of their junior winners:

“Be nice to everyone so they have a good day.” - Lily

“Be more positive about myself and smile every day.” - Sam

City of Mandurah Mental Health Week 2019

City of Mandurah - Peel Wellness Wednesday (Free Family Day)

City of Mandurah led a community event at the Mandurah Eastern Foreshore, where they promoted the Act Belong Commit message. Furthermore, an Act-Belong-Commit picnic set was donated to the Peel Volunteer Resource Centre (PVRC) to award to the first person who signed up as a volunteer during Mental Health Week! You can check out the Peel Wellness Wednesday Facebook page for highlights from the week.

South West Women’s Health Information Centre (SWWHIC) ran workshops promoting a variety of therapies for relaxation and re-energising. Open to everyone, the event included an introduction to Gentle Yoga, a presentation on aromatherapy, gentle movement to music, great food and the opportunity to connect socially. Participants were also able to speak with mental health professionals and visit the Think Mental Health Marquee.

Centacare Geraldton - Sunset Drumming, Men’s Hub Event and a Mental Health Expo

Centacare Geraldton had a busy week for Mental Health Week 2019!

A Sunset Drumming Circle took place on the Geraldton Foreshore, where individuals and families were invited to join in, create harmony and connect with others.

The highlight of the week was attending the Mental Health Expo at Nagle Catholic College. The expo was well attended, and the Centacare stall often had a queue of students waiting to talk to Michelle, Kristy and Rachel. Michelle asked kids to make a pledge to stay mentally healthy, Rachel ran a mindfulness exercise and discussed ways to look after mental health, and Kristy ran a popular drumming circle.
