Whirlwind Breath: An energising brain break

Posted 31 Mar 2025

If you are feeling slow, sleepy or sluggish and need to be ready to learn or focus on an important task, a full-body energising activity can help you reset to a more engaged state.

The Whirlwind Breath is a Mindful Movement brain break activity that can awaken the body.

Teachers: It is a great mindfulness activity within the classroom to start the day or transition between lessons.

How to do the Whirlwind Breath

A sequence of six images showing a person dressed in black performing a step-by-step guided movement exercise. Each pose is framed within a dotted purple circle against a white background. The movements include raising arms overhead, extending arms forward, stretching arms wide, folding forward, and returning to the initial position.

  1. Let’s stand up tall.
  2. Breathing in, reaching our arms up over head.
  3. Breathing out, moving our arms half way, in front of our chests.
  4. Breathing in, stretching our arms out, to the side.
  5. Breathing out, bring our arms back half way.
  6. Breathing in, reaching our arms up over head. Stretch up!
  7. Ready – let’s hinge at the hips, reach for our toes and breathe out haaahhhh.
  8. Let’s slowly roll up to standing.
  9. Repeat 2-3 times.
